The New york Power Authority sought to design an iconic pedestrian bridge which would connect SUNY Brockport to the Empire State Trail and the Brockport Village Center on the historic Erie Canal.

Working alongside Arup, the engineer-of-record and SHoP Architects as the lead designer for the New York Power Authority, Behan Planning and Design helped to develop a landscape architectural approach to integrate a uniquely curving ADA-accessible bridge across the Erie Canal.  The serpentine bridge, which wraps around an existing guard gate, provides unique landing areas on either bank for seating, relaxation and gathering events. Pedestrian amenities such as bicycle racks, seating integrated into the sloping terrain, and interpretive signage were included in the work.

The Pedestrian Bridge at Brockport Guard Gate is one of the economic development projects associated with the Reimagine the Canals portfolio, a $300 million initiative announced in 2020.
